Jammu, June 29: District Police Jammu, in collaboration with the Law Department of the University of Jammu, organized a comprehensive one-day workshop cum training program today at the seminar hall of the Department of Law.
The workshop focused on acquainting participants with upcoming legislative changes scheduled to come into effect from 1st July. Retired District and Sessions Judge Subhash Gupta was as the Chief Guest, emphasizing the pivotal role of these new laws in shaping contemporary criminal justice practices. Shamsher Singh Parihar, retired DySP and distinguished investigator, was honored as the guest of honour, recognizing his extensive contributions to the field.
The programme commenced with a formal welcome address by Prof. Manju Jamwal, highlighting the imperative need for these legislative updates and underscoring the workshop’s significance in preparing stakeholders involved in criminal justice administration. Prof. Savita Nayyar, serving as the main Resource Person, delivered a detailed presentation elucidating key amendments from the current laws to the new criminal statutes. She emphasized special provisions concerning women’s rights, measures against organized crime, regulations on mob lynching, and revised protocols on offenses like rape.
During his presidential address, Subhash Gupta reiterated the critical importance of training judicial officers, forensic experts, and all personnel engaged in the criminal justice system to ensure effective implementation of the new legislations. He stressed the adoption of videography for all seizures conducted under these laws to enhance transparency and accountability.
The workshop included an engaging Q&A session where faculty members, scholars, and students from the Department of Law actively participated, posing pertinent questions regarding various facets of criminal justice administration. Their queries were comprehensively addressed by the officials and subject matter experts.
Professor Sanjay Gupta delivered the formal vote of thanks, expressing heartfelt appreciation to the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, student participants, and organizers for their invaluable contributions to the success of the workshop. Dr. Vijay Saigal, Organizing Secretary of the workshop, highlighted the collaborative efforts between District Police Jammu and the University of Jammu in fostering meaningful interactions and knowledge exchange between academia and law enforcement.
The event was attended by the guests including Shivam Siddharth, IPS (SP City North, Jammu), Ashok Kumar (DySP Headquarters, Jammu), Deepak Pathania (Inspector, SHO Nowabad, Jammu), Tariq Gorsi (Sub-Inspector), along with faculty members Dr. Mohd. Arif, Dr. Aarti Sharma, Dr.Navdeep Kaur, Dr. Sonia Aneja, Dr. Nitan Sharma, scholars, and students from the Department of Law and The Law School.
