JAMMU, July 19: On the last day of the Junior Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Christchurch, New Zealand, fencer Shreya Gupta from Jammu and Kashmir put on a magnificent display and continued her winning streak at the international level, taking home a silver medal in the Sabre team event.
Making the Country and J&K-UT proud, Shreya won second medal in this championship adding to her individual bronze medal. It is for the first time that a fencer from J&K has achieved twin medals in any International competition.
Shreya’s contribution of 2 medals helped Jammu and Kashmir to achieve the best ever medal tally of 2 silver and 3 bronze in commonwealth championships. Besides Shreya the other medal winners were Harshit Kohli-silver, Sufiyan and Chhavi both bronze in team events.
On the last day of Championship, the Indian Women team comprising Shreya Gupta, Jeffarlin, Laishram Abi Devi and Solanki Gauri defeated England comfortably by 45-28 in semifinals but in finals the team was defeated by strong Australian team in well contested match with score at 45-29. Pertinently, Shreya earned maximum points in both matches and thus played a major role in Indian win.
