JAMMU, Aug 22: The District Jammu Weightlifting Championship, organized by the District Jammu Weightlifting Association in collaboration with the J&K Weightlifting Association, concluded today at the Indoor Sports Complex in Bhagwati Nagar. Over 35 athletes of both genders competed in the two-day event, which was sponsored by the J&K Sports Council.
The closing ceremony saw the participation of prominent figures including Baljinder Pal Singh, Divisional Sports Officer; Harbhajan Singh, president of the J&K Weightlifting Association; Daljeet Singh, DySP J&K Police along with other key officials and representatives from various weightlifting associations.
General Secretary Yudhvir Singh highlighted the association’s zero-tolerance policy towards doping, emphasizing that the health of athletes is paramount. Harbhajan Singh further announced that future events will include mandatory dope testing by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). Following directives from Sahdev Yadav, president of the Indian Weightlifting Federation, no event will be held without NADA’s participation to ensure a doping-free environment in weightlifting across the country.
The District Jammu Weightlifting Championship concluded with the following winners: Vanshika Gupta (49 kg), Riya Mehra (55 kg), Chahat Singh and Priya Kumari (59 kg), Sakshi Sharma (64 kg), Palak Manhas and Radhika (71 kg), Ananya Rakwal (76 kg), Koushika Sharma and Akam Kour (81 kg), Megha Wazir (87 kg), and Sharon James (above 87 kg).
