SRINAGAR, Sept 28: The 5th Indoor Rowing Championship concluded at the Pokhribal Water Sports Centre here today, marking a significant milestone for the growth of water sports in the region. Organized by the J&K Rowing & Sculling Association in partnership with the J&K Sports Council, the event saw participation from around 200 athletes across Senior, Junior and Sub-junior categories.
Indoor rowing, a relatively new sport in India, uses rowing machines (ergometers) to simulate the motion of water-based rowing, making it an innovative and effective training platform. The championship not only provided a competitive space but also served as a qualifying round for the National Championship.
During the opening ceremony, Gulzar Ahmad, SHO Rainawari Police Station, addressed the participants, reaffirming the administration’s dedication to upgrading local sports infrastructure to better support athletes. National Coach and Olympic jury member Bilques Mir also highlighted the event’s role in promoting water sports and providing local athletes a chance to shine on a national stage.
The day featured a series of competitive races, with enthusiastic support from spectators, culminating in a felicitation ceremony where Dr. Rafiq, the competition director, awarded prizes to top performers. The championship showcased the determination and talent of young athletes, fostering pride within the community.
Local residents praised Bilques Mir for his efforts in revitalizing the Pokhribal area, which was once marred by social issues. The championship’s success, combined with the natural beauty of the location, has highlighted Pokhribal’s potential as a premier water sports destination. Mushtaq Ahmad, a local community member, noted the area’s tourism potential, emphasizing how water sports could boost local employment and promote Kashmir’s cultural and natural heritage.
