Government Medical College and Hospital Jammu had to come up with establishment of an eye-bank, the initiative for which had started few years ago and even a mass signature campaign too had been made as a protest for inordinate delay caused and to impress upon the Government to have the eye- bank started at the earliest. With practically no developments taking place, it remains a distant dream in Jammu while at Srinagar in Kashmir division, not only has the one been established but it has long back started functioning as well.
Procurement of necessary equipment and required infrastructure continues to delude and prolong its early establishment and in this context a Public Interest Litigation is already filed in the State High Court and for which the Division Bench has recently directed Managing Director of Jammu and Kashmir Medical Supplies Corporation Limited to file a status report within four weeks. However, an assurance has been given that various steps were being taken to ensure purchase of the necessary infrastructure, machinery, equipment etc to have the eye-bank made operational. Let us hope that the eye-bank is started now at the earliest so that two different yardsticks adopted for two parts of the same State by the Government stand atoned.
