JAMMU, Feb 1: Suriya Saptami was celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety today. In this connection functions were held at Martand Suriya Bhawan Paloura , here and at holy Shrine of Martand (Mattan) in South Kashmir district of Anantnag Kashmir.
At Martand Suriya Bhawan Paloura a Maha Yagya was solemnised on the occasion. The Yagya commenced yesterday evening and it culminated with Puranahuti this afternoon.
A large number of devotees drawn from different parts of Jammu thronged the Martand Suroya Bhawan Paloura from early morning to take part in the celebrations and pay their obeisance to Sun God.
President of Shri Martand Tirath Trust, Ashok Ji Sadha welcomed the devotees and other dignitaries who attended the function. He threw light on the significance of holy Martand shrine and working of the Trust .
Omkar Nath Shastri chairman, Pt Prem Nath Shastri Sanskritik Shodh Sansthan and editor -in- chief Vijeshwar Panchang was the chief guest on the occasion. He highlighted the religious significance of Suriya Saptami and Tirathraj Martand. He said the Suriya Saptami is the auspicious birthday of Maha Martandji. He eulogised the role of Martand Trust in providing facilities to the pilgrims visiting for darshan of various shrines to Valley including the holy Amarnath Shrine.
On the occasion religious sermons were also given by Swami Kumar Ji of Geeta Satsangh Ashram, Muthi. H K Sidha publicity secretary of the Trust also spoke on the religious significance Lord Martand. The Maha Yagya is solemnized on Magh Shukla Paksh Saptami at the shrine every year.
The devotees were served with prashad after Puranahuti. Dr Tej Krishan Bhat, general secretary of ASKPC also attended the function. The vote of thanks was proposed by Tej Krishan Tickoo general secretary of the Trust.
On the occasion of Suriya Saptami, Pooja -Archana was also held at holy shrine of Martand, Anantnag in a traditional way. The devotees who thronged the shrine were later served with the Prashad.
