For long, Jammu and Kashmir has faced the challenge of inadequate road infrastructure, primarily due to its rugged terrain and harsh weather conditions. However, in recent years, a massive transformation has been underway, spearheaded by the Central Government, focussing on improving connectivity through a network of national highways, tunnels, and expressways. The Mughal Road Tunnel project, announced by the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, is the latest milestone in this infrastructure revolution. The Mughal Road, an ancient route with deep historical significance, connects Rajouri and Poonch districts to the Kashmir Valley. Historically, it served as a vital trade route between the regions, but it remains closed during the harsh winter months, limiting its potential. The proposed Mughal Road Tunnel aims to change this, converting it into an all-weather road, reducing travel time, and providing a reliable alternate route to the frequently blocked Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. The tunnel will not only bring convenience to the locals but also open up new avenues for trade, tourism, and cultural exchange.
The announcement of the tunnel’s construction reflects the Government’s commitment to bridging connectivity gaps in J&K. The DPR is already completed, and tenders for construction will be issued soon. The road infrastructure is key to fostering peace and prosperity in the region, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision of a developed and peaceful J&K. The larger network of highways and tunnels being built in the region is equally promising. Work has commenced on 27 tunnels in J&K, 10 of which are already completed. These projects are pivotal for connecting remote areas with the rest of the country, boosting economic growth, promoting tourism, and bringing opportunities for the region’s youth. Good roads and highways are crucial for reducing isolation and fostering development, especially in border regions like J&K, which have suffered from both geographical and political challenges. The proposed Mughal Road Tunnel, once complete, will stand as a symbol of progress. Not only will it enhance regional integration, but it will also lay the groundwork for increased economic opportunities.
