JAMMU, July 31: Indian students excelled at the 35th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2024, held in Astana, Kazakhstan. Competing against 305 students from 80 countries, the Indian team delivered a remarkable performance, winning one gold and three silver medals.
Vedant Sakre from Mumbai, Maharashtra, clinched a gold medal, while Ishan Pednekar from Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, Shrijith Sivakumar from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and Yashashwi Kumar from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, each secured silver medals. This achievement highlights India’s growing prowess in international academic competitions.
The Olympiad featured rigorous assessments, including four experimental and two theory exams, covering subjects like animal anatomy, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and plant biology. The Indian team was guided by a dedicated group of mentors, including Prof. Sasikumar Menon, Dr. Mayuri Rege, Dr. Rajesh Patkar, and Dr. Devesh Suthar.
Recognition is due to the teachers and mentors who trained the students at orientation and pre-departure camps organized by the Biology Olympiad cell of HBCSE (Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education). The success was also supported by the National Steering Committee, teacher organizations, and Government funding agencies, underscoring the importance of collective effort in nurturing young talent.
