The recent collaboration between the DRDO and the IIT-Delhi to develop lightweight bulletproof jackets marks a significant leap in India’s indigenous defence technology. The innovative bulletproof jackets, aptly named ‘ABHED’ (Advanced Ballistics for High Energy Defeat), stand as a testament to the synergy between research institutions, academia, and the defence sector. These jackets, which provide 360-degree protection, meet the highest threat levels, reaffirming India’s growing self-reliance in critical defence technologies. At a time when the modern battlefield demands greater mobility, agility, and protection, the development of lightweight bulletproof jackets is critical. Traditional bulletproof vests have often been criticised for their weight, which impedes the movement of soldiers, especially in dynamic combat scenarios. The newly developed ‘ABHED’ jackets, weighing between 8.2 kg and 9.5 kg depending on the BIS level, represent a significant reduction in weight while maintaining or even exceeding the protective capabilities required by the Indian Army’s stringent General Staff Qualitative Requirement.
One of the standout features of these jackets is their modular design, allowing soldiers greater flexibility in combat without compromising safety. The front and rear armour plates, made from indigenous boron carbide ceramic material and advanced polymers, offer complete 360-degree protection. This advanced material science, coupled with simulations and rigorous testing at high strain rates, ensures that the jackets can withstand the highest threat levels, including armour-piercing rounds. The meticulous research and successful trials conducted as part of the R&D protocols speak volumes about the robustness of the product. The technology transfer to Indian industries for production is another remarkable aspect of this innovation. The involvement of domestic industry, underlined by the short-listing of select Indian manufacturers, is not just a boost to the Make in India initiative but also a critical step towards building a strong defence manufacturing base. By ensuring that cutting-edge defence technologies are produced within the country, India is gradually reducing its reliance on imports. With this success, India’s strategic capabilities and innovation in defence technology continue to advance, strengthening national security.
