SRINAGAR, Sept 15: A young woman from South Kashmir Pulwama’s Arihal village has died due to alleged medical negligence by doctors at a private hospital, prompting authorities to order an investigation to determine responsibility.
According to details, the patient, Saboora Arshid, 22, daughter of Arshid Hussain Bhat, a resident of Arihal, Pulwama, was undergoing treatment at Mohammadia Nursing Home. She was scheduled for a minor nose surgery at the hospital on Saturday.
After the patient was taken to the operation theatre, it was reported that the hospital staff failed to inform the family about her condition for several hours.
It was only after three hours that the hospital staff told the family to take the patient to a Government hospital, apparently due to the complications, where she was later declared dead.
The incident, which occurred late Saturday night, sparked outrage among the public, who demanded action against the hospital and called for the immediate sealing of the facility.
A few hours after the incident, authorities swiftly responded and ordered investigation and sealed the operation theatre as a pre-emptive measure.
According to officials, pending the outcome of the inquiry, the Tehsildar (Executive Magistrate) of Pulwama, in collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer and the SHO of Pulwama, was directed to seal the operation theatre at Mohammadia Nursing Home immediately.
“This measure is taken to ensure the preservation of evidence and records related to the case,” officials stated, noting that the process would be conducted in accordance with standard operating procedures. “The entire procedure will be video-recorded to ensure transparency and proper documentation,” they added.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir (DHSK) has also formed a committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the patient’s death, which is alleged to have occurred due to medical negligence.
“In order to formally investigate the death of a patient, Saboora, daughter of Arshid Hussain Bhat, resident of Arihal Pulwama, at Mohammadia Nursing Home Pulwama on September 14, 2024, due to alleged medical negligence, sanction is hereby accorded to the constitution of an inquiry committee,” read an official order issued in this regard.
The committee will include Dr. Yasmeen Kangoo, Assistant Director of DHSK, as Chairperson, along with Dr. Masood Rashid, Consultant Anesthetist at DH Shopian, and Dr. Imran Ali, Consultant Surgeon at SDH Kreeri, as members.
“The inquiry committee shall conduct an in-depth investigation into the death and submit its report with specific recommendations within a week’s time, enabling appropriate action to be taken against those found responsible as per the law,” the order stated.
