JAMMU, Sept 29: Theatre group ‘Natrang’ here today staged Balwant Thakur’s Dogri play ‘Gatt’ which was based on Krishna Chander’s famous Urdu classic short story ‘Khadda’.
The play opens with a person falling into a ditch whose pleas for help remained unanswered by all. Different people pass by him like surveyors, young men, religious persons, leaders, cops, political leader in power and a foreigner.
The person in distress is given different excuses but no help. The ‘Sadhu’ showers blessing and prays for peace to him. The cop lodges an FIR and asks him to report to the Police Station. The foreigner lady enquires about his choice between India and Pakistan.
The situation becomes more dramatic when a Minister after a complaint from the public about the worsening of road condition, makes a round of the area.
Workers of the Public Works Department instead of taking out the man from the ditch put wooden planks over it and create a stage for Minister’s speech. The minister lists his developments and flays the opposition.
After public meeting, wooden planks are removed but no one pays any heed to the man in ditch.
Finally a man from the audience appears and appeals everyone to render a helping hand to this common man who is still in the ditch.
The play reflects the plight of poor masses who continue to suffer for want of help from those at the helm.
Actors who performed in the play were Neeraj Kant, Gopi Sharma, Mohd. Yaseen, Brijesh Avtaar Sharma, Kananpreet Kaur, Sanket Bhagat, Kushal Bhat, Aadesh Dhar and Vishal Sharma.
Lights of the play were executed by Neeraj Kant and the presentation was done by Palshin Dutta.
