KATRA, Sept 11: In a remarkable surgical achievement, the doctors at Sri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspecialty Hospital have successfully removed a rare tumor located in the mediastinum (chest cavity) of a young girl. The tumor had been compressing her heart, severely affecting its function and posing a significant risk to her life.
The intricate procedure was led by Dr Abhinav Choudhary, Consultant Surgical Oncology, and supported by Dr Romil Dutt, Consultant CTVS. The anesthesia team, including Dr Pankaj, Dr Kuldeep Raina, and Dr Parul Gohil, played a crucial role in ensuring the success of the surgery.
Dr Choudhary noted that the patient had previously consulted multiple surgeons locally who were reluctant to undertake the operation due to the high risk involved, including potential injury to the heart and major blood vessels adjacent to the tumor. Additionally, the family faced financial constraints, making travel to specialized centers in Mumbai unfeasible.
After a thorough review of the case, Dr Choudhary assured the patient and her family that despite the high risk, the surgery could be successfully performed at the Hospital. He emphasized that the procedure would be conducted free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, reflecting the hospital’s commitment to accessible healthcare.
The surgery, which lasted six hours, involved meticulous dissection of the tumor to carefully separate it from the heart and major blood vessels. The patient endured the procedure well and has since been discharged. A follow-up examination has confirmed that she is now completely free of symptoms.
Dr Choudhary expressed his satisfaction with the successful outcome, stating, “This surgery was a significant challenge, but our team’s expertise and dedication made it possible. It is incredibly rewarding to see the patient recover fully. ”
