AIZWAL, Aug 25: Three women from Mizoram, who had been working as housemaids in Syria before being rescued, have safely returned home, a senior state police official confirmed on Sunday.
After spending three weeks in the Indian embassy in Damascus, the women departed Syria on August 20. Embassy officials facilitated all necessary arrangements, including securing their exit visas. They arrived in Delhi the same day and rested at the Mizoram House in the national capital for two days before travelling home. The women finally landed at Lengpui Airport on Friday.
According to police, the women had been sent abroad by a local placement agency named E&K Agency, located in Aizawl’s Vaivakawn neighbourhood. They had left for Syria on November 6, 2022, believing they were headed for Dubai with a promise of earning around Rs 20,000 per month.
However, after spending four months in Dubai without any employment, the agency in Dubai informed them that they would be sent to Iraq. It was only after boarding the plane that the women realised they were being flown to Syria.
Enduring harsh working conditions in Syria, with inadequate food and rest, the women’s health began to deteriorate. They managed to reach out to people in Mizoram who offered assistance. Eventually, their employers took them to court, where the women won their case, paving the way for their return to India with the aid of the state government.
The Mizoram government covered the expenses for their return. Two of the women hail from Hnahthial district in southern Mizoram, while the third is from Champhai district, near the Myanmar border. (UNI)
