US welcomes renewed talks to end N. Ireland deadlock after journalist killed : White House

WASHINGTON, Apr 27: The Trump administration welcomes the new joint initiative by the United Kingdom and Ireland to launch new negotiations in a bid to revive the local Power-Sharing government in Northern Ireland, the White House said in a statement.
“The United States welcomes the initiative today of the British and Irish governments to convene political talks in Northern Ireland,” the statement said on Friday. “We encourage Northern Ireland’s political leaders to return to the negotiating table to restore the region’s local government.”
The White House also said it was “shocked and saddened” over the killing of 29-year-old Northern Irish journalist Lyra McKee during rioting in Derry City, Northern Ireland last week.
McKee was regarded as one of the brightest talents in Northern Ireland journalism and was working on an investigation of the disappearance of young boys in North Belfast suspected of being sexually abused and murdered during the so-called Troubles in North Belfast nearly 40 years ago.
United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May and Irish Republic Prime Minister or Taoiseach Leo Varadkar attended McKee’s funeral service at St. Anne’s cathedral, Belfast on Wednesday this week.
